Research and empathy are the cornerstone of customer-centric design. The goal of empathy is to identify the individual needs associated with the design challenge and to uncover insights and purchase drivers to guide the design process.

Defining and modeling involves synthesizing the findings in order to articulate and approach the challenge in co-creation mode, understanding the type of users we are designing for, selecting a limited set of relevant needs to be met, extrapolating insights and defining the modus operandi.

The goal of ideating is to produce a high number of diverse ideas, turning a problem into a solution. Once we have selected the most appropriate ideas, we focus on giving them depth, conceptualizing solutions according to the extrapolated insights.

Design on the basis of good ideation is the following phase. Then comes prototyping, which means making fast, low-fidelity representations of ideas, with the goal of sharing the solutions with the users and getting feedback based on their experience.

During testing, target groups’ positive responses to possible solutions are evaluated, learning especially from extreme users and rejecters. This brings us to the iteration step, focused on perfecting the final version of the product or service solution.
